• Welder - Department Lead

  • Overview

    Welding Lead is responsible for the coordination and execution of day-to-day activities for 1st shift welding team and coordination to 2nd shift Lead to support Schiller Grounds Care Core Values, Continuous Improvement, and Customer requirements.  In addition to leading others in these areas, this position is hands on requiring performing in hand welding, robot welding, grinding, drilling and other activities that support the business as required.  This is a 1st shift position.





    • Coordinate and supervise activities of workers engaged in welding/drilling activities by applying knowledge of welding techniques, materials, fixtures and equipment
    • Communicate safety, quality, general information, and work assignments to welders (1st shift, and 2nd shift as needed)
    • Assist in interviewing and hiring prospective candidates
    • Provide employee training through the application of welding techniques, fixtures and equipment
    • Responsible for payroll input (ADP), schedule/approve vacations
    • Write and administer annual performance reviews
    • Address disciplinary action as required
    • Provide written and verbal communication to customers with status updates
    • Ability to lead projects from beginning to end with minimal supervision
    • Participate in cross-functional team activities and projects, providing technical support and expertise
    • Other duties as assigned


    • Ensure proper procedures are in place and followed for a safe operation
    • Constant vigilance to be on the lookout for all possible safety issues
    • Ensure welders adhere to company Safety Policies and are performing in a safe manner
    • Ensure daily, weekly and monthly Safety Audits/Training are completed
    • Coordinate response to safety concerns
    • Notify supervision/management of any immediate safety issues, hazardous situations, etc.



    • Identify and select the welding procedure used on jobs
    • Ensure all welders are capable of performing to the required welding to standards
    • Conduct quality audits by inspecting welds, parts, and fixtures to ensure quality standards are met
    • Manage non-conformance through corrective actions, including welding to repair non-conformances
    • Resolve problems or assist others in solving problems



    • Analyze customer demand (Kanban, Work Orders, Etc.) to ensure timely deliver is being met
    • Manage situations that threaten efficient production (e.g. Parts Shortages and Non-Conformances)
    • Schedule overtime to maintain daily output to meet build schedule and monthly build schedule completion
    • Maintain production reports (shortage sheets, daily job logs, etc.) as required and update all area boards


    • Ensure efficiencies are being met and take corrective actions to address discrepancies
    • Report labor activities and/or manufacturing cycle time discrepancies
    • Perform manual welding, robot welding, grinding, drilling, and other activities so support the business


    Continuous Improvement: 

    • Lead and execute continuous improvement activities in welding, weld cells, and processes
    • Create and maintain work instructions as required for welding operations
    • Maintain cleanliness of department, tools, and welding equipment through 5S and TPM activities
    • Identify issues affecting product and processes through data collection
    • Manage engineering changes through welding
    • Coordinate pilot activities with Engineering, ME’s, Purchasing, Tool Room, and Quality



    • Detail oriented, analytical, safety/quality conscious, organized, effective communication skills
    • Two year technical degree or the suitable combination of education and experience
    • 3-5 years welding experience required
    • MIG Welding Certified
    • Robot Editing and Programming experience desirable
    • 1st responder certification attained within first 120 days
    • Familiarity with Schiller products is a plus



    • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds
    • Constant standing, occasional walking
    • Frequent to constant bending at the waist and twisting
    • Occasional use of hoist
    • Occasional use of forklift and/or other powered moving equipment
    • Constant light grasping, occasional power grip
    • Frequent finger manipulation
    • Constant bilateral reaching at waist to chest level, occasional overhead reaching
    • Frequent wrist movement
    • Ability to tolerate welding environment-use of welding helmet, etc.
